What a gem! I could stop here with my review because I truly mean gem, as I am feeling a bit like I have been invited into the precious lives of the families in this book, given a high five and a hug, and allowed myself to exhale with a sense of calm that yes, I too, can homeschool a high schooler or even my children in general - even if I need that high five and hug just about every single day, it seems (we're in the tweens, and yes, I'm wiped from the drama and dd's hormonal changes).
From the beginning of day one of our homeschooling journey, I have always felt like my boat was sure to have a leak in it somewhere, and sooner or later, I was going to sink and have no choice but to send my kid(s) back to "school" in defeat of my own inability to create the next Enrico Fermi or George Eastman, or give my children their proper wings to fly. I knew without a shadow of a doubt that I loved my children beyond the moon, and was a good mother... but a good teacher.. ack! The nerve to even consider such a thing! This book carried me through how to approach challenges by consistently thinking outside the box, with expectation and tenacity (Our Homeschool Journey: A Lifestyle of Learning, Flexibility, and Change, by Ladonna Beals, page 11), or trusting that God was indeed going to meet me where I was, right here and right now (Lord, Where's the Toolbox? by Christie Inocencio, page 51). I don't extract comfort or example from fiction. I lean into insight from families who have been there and done that before me, who have walked the fires with the "system", and have been a voice for me even when they did not know it. This book has reaffirmed my confidence that I am doing the very best for my children in homeschooling them in a safe, Godly, understanding, and nurturing environment at home, while leading me in the practicalities of what to expect in my heart as my children age up and enter the world on their own footing (The Finish Line's in Sight, by Donna Rees, page 77). I love that Donna referenced Luke 1:37 - "With God nothing shall be impossible". Some days this is all I have to stand upon, as I have such a far way in which to go until we are empty nesters, and the days often challenge my courage to take another step forward. I am also very appreciative of the author's list of recommended resources (other books, websites, and Bible verses) found at the back of the book.
I would refer Help Lord, I’m Getting Ready to Start Homeschooling My High Schooler! to any parent who is already along the road in their homeschooling journey, or one who has just begun to consider the journey. It was a long distance passing of the torch of encouragement and salve to my spirit, one story after another of hope, love, teachable moments, and learning how to love more deeply and unconditionally through the Lord's eyes. Truly, it was one of the best resources I've come across recently. Thank you!
